Projected 2020 College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings for Week 15
By Zach Bigalke
Georgia was unable to play in Week 14 as Vanderbilt was unable to field enough players to safely contest their game due to COVID-19 cases on the Commodores roster. With the Bulldogs sidelined, the big question in Athens this weekend is whether Kirby Smart’s squad will remain the top-ranked team with two losses when the College Football Playoff selection committee commiserates to determine its next set of Top 25 rankings.
That the Bulldogs are ranked so high is a testament to the SEC’s perception in the eyes of the committee. Georgia faltered by 17 against Alabama and by 16 against Florida, and their six wins to date came against teams that are a combined 17-26 otherwise this year. A stout rushing defense has papered over issues with the secondary and the offense, and in a lot of ways the committee seems sold on the brand and the track record of Smart-coached teams.
A trip to Missouri in Week 15 was originally slated to be the regular-season finale for Georgia. Instead, they will host Vanderbilt between the hedges on December 19 in the new conclusion to their campaign. Should they win out and finish 8-2, there is a good possibility that a New Year’s Six berth will be waiting on the other side.
