Florida Football: 3 takeaways from ugly Cotton Bowl loss to Oklahoma
1. The Todd Grantham era in Gainesville should finally be over
Fret not, Gator fans, there’s a good chance Dan Mullen will take a look at the numbers and check the tapes for year-end performance reviews and realize that Todd Grantham didn’t uphold his end of the bargain.
All year long, it was Florida’s offense that carried the load while the defense was one of the worst in the SEC, getting gashed week in and week out despite having plenty of talent.
Everything seemed to boil over in the Kentucky game back in November as Mullen got in Grantham’s face after a horrid start. It seemed as if things were a bit rocky, but nothing ever came from it. His job had been in jeopardy already, but the Cotton Bowl performance should be enough to officially signal the end of the defensive coordinator’s reign.
Grantham’s defense looked terrible once again versus one of the most explosive offenses in the country, allowing nearly 700 yards and 55 points in a blowout loss.
Imagine if Florida actually had a competent defense this season — we may be talking about a playoff with the Gators in it.
The Grantham era may finally be over — and Florida fans are rejoicing.
