The Nick Saban Tree is a good tree to pluck from

Alabama head coach Nick Saban said that the only assistants he hired were those who wanted to be head coaches. Sarkisian was one of those coaches. Nick Saban’s assistants have had lots of success as head coaches as well.

For example, Mark Dantonio, who worked for Saban at Michigan State, is the Spartan’s all-time leader in wins.

It’s not difficult to find Saban assistants since he coaches against them most seasons. Currently, there are four former Saban assistants in the SEC.

Lane Kiffin is at Mississippi, Jimbo Fisher is at Texas A&M, Jeremy Pruitt is at Tennessee, and Kirby Smart is at Georgia. That does not include Will Muschamp, who coached at Florida and South Carolina, and Jim McElwain, who coached at Florida.

One of the more prudent reasons to select a Saban assistant is their success. Many of his former assistants have been successful as head coaches. Fisher won a National Title at Florida State, and Kirby Smart has won an SEC title and played for a title.

Steve Sarkisian has arguably orchestrated the best offense in college football history. Mac Jones, Najee Harris, and DeVonta Harris are all Heisman candidates. The Longhorns have had their issues on offense, and Sarkisian could bring up some points and compete with Oklahoma.
