Florida football hosted one of the best running backs in the 2022 class on June 18 and Dan Mullen’s recruiting pitch when he was on campus seemed to have worked.

Terrance Gibbs was already considered a slight Florida lean before his trip to Gainesville last weekend and the Gators come away with the heavy favorite distinction. The Gators picked up another couple of crystal balls on 247Sports and they now own 100 percent of the predictions.

The Winter Park, Fla., native is a top target of both Florida and Florida State but the Seminoles are falling behind in this race rather quickly despite getting a visit from Gibbs on June 11.

Under Mullen, Florida’s run game has left a lot to be desired despite the amount of talent the Gators have had in the backfield. He’s slowly changing that narrative — or at least he hopes to — with the additions of Lorenzo Lingard and Demarkcus Bowman over the past two offseason. Two former five-stars in the backfield is a good start. Add Gibbs and they’re cooking with gas.

Gibbs is the No. 187 overall prospect in the 2022 class and 17th-best running back in the composite rankings. He holds over two dozen offers from the likes of LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, Texas A&M, and West Virginia.

It’s safe to say if Florida wins this recruiting battle, it would be massive.

Florida football’s quest to jumpstart the run game

Talent hasn’t been the issue in the backfield under Mullen but last season Kyle Trask was so good that the rushing attack fell by the wayside.

Adding Bowman this offseason to a backfield with Dameon Pierce, Nay’Quan Wright, Malik Davis, and Lingard is only going to help get things back on track. The offense should be more complete in 2021 and securing a commitment from Gibbs will only make for a brighter future.

This Florida offense is going to be scary for years to come.
