Georgia Southern Football: Can Eagles make fourth straight bowl game?
Schedule will make another bowl game a challenge
The Eagles face one of the more challenging schedules in the Sun Belt. As well as facing the top three Sun Belt contenders, Georgia Southern football will have a non-conference schedule that includes Arkansas, BYU, and Florida Atlantic. Another bowl game will be challenging.
- Game 1: Gardner Webb (W)- This should be the easiest win of the season for the Eagles at home.
- Game 2: At FAU (W)- Expect a close game, but the Owls have QB issues of their own and I think the Eagles defense will get the win.
- Game 3: At Arkansas (L)- The Razorbacks bring back 18 starters and have a stingy defense.
- Game 4: Louisiana (L)- The Eagles lost in heartbreaking fashion to Louisiana last season and I think the Ragin Cajuns will get the win in Statesboro.
- Game 5: Arkansas State (W)- The Razorbacks hired Butch Jones as the new head coach, but I think the Red Wolves are a year away from contention.
- Game 6: At Troy (L)- I expect the Trojans to have a solid season and they will get the win at home against the Eagles.
- Game 7: At South Alabama (W)- The Jaguars might be the Sun Belt’s worst team and I think Georgia Southern wins big.
- Game 8: Georgia State (L)- This is a true coin flip game, but I think the Panthers have the more explosive offense.
- Game 9: Coastal Carolina (L)- The Eagles get both Coastal and Louisiana at home, but I think the other team’s experience is going to be the key factor in both games.
- Game 10: At Texas State (W)- Texas State has given the Eagles problems over the past couple of seasons, but I don’t think this is the year the Bobcats get the win.
- Game 11: BYU (L)- The Cougars are reloading this year, but by season’s end, expect them to be firing on all cylinders.
- Game 12: At Appalachian State (L)- The Eagles need this win for bowl eligibility, but will come up short in one of college football’s most underrated rivalries.
Final Record: 5-7, 3-5 Sun Belt
This is a record that won’t go over well in Statesboro, but with new faces at key positions and facing teams that return so much proven talent, it is going to be an uphill battle to get to a bowl game. If Tomlin can be a big upgrade from Werts, this prediction is likely wrong and the Eagles are capable of upsetting one of the Sun Belt’s big three teams.
