Louisiana football on verge of best season in school history?
Louisiana football’s 2020 season was a roaring success on many fronts. The Ragin’ Cajuns won 10 games and got a share of the Sun Belt title, and they bring back 21 starters from that team and head coach Billy Napier turned down multiple jobs in the SEC to come back to Lafayette to try and have a season for the ages.
Louisiana is going to play Texas in the season opener and that might be the biggest game in school history. Win that and a 12-0 season is certainly possible, as well as a berth in a New Year’s Six bowl game.
The Ragin’ Cajuns have turned into one of the Sun Belt’s top programs during the decade. Under former head coach Mark Hudspeth, Louisiana saw a four-year stretch from 2011 until 2015 where they went 9-4 each season and won bowl game. Three of the next four years finished without a bowl berth and Hudspeth was consequently fired and former Alabama and Clemson assistant Billy Napier was brought in as the next head coach.
After a 7-7 debut season, Napier has won double-digit games in back-to-back years and seems poised to do that again, at a minimum, in 2021.
A lot of teams are returning more players than normal this season due to the COVID-19 free year of eligibility, but Louisiana has the most returning production in the country is going to make a huge difference this season.
It is not going to be easy to win another Sun Belt championship this season, however.
This is a conference that is going to be tough at the top with competition like Coastal Carolina and App State to go through and teams like Georgia State and Troy are never pushovers. This team should be in contention for the Sun Belt title in 2021 and maybe much more.
