Coastal Carolina Football: Can Chanticleers replicate last seasons run?
Coastal Carolina Football was one of the best stories of the 2020 football season and they are out to prove that last season was no fluke
In three seasons as a member of the FBS and the Sun Belt, Coastal Carolina football had only won 13 games. Last season, the Chanticleers set the college football world on fire, going 11-1, winning the Sun Belt, winning an instant classic game vs 13th ranked BYU at home, and was very close to having an undefeated season before they fell to Liberty in a close bowl game.
With 21 starters returning and head coach Jamey Chadwell still as the head coach, Coastal is looking to finish the job and go undefeated in 2021.
It is hard to remember when a school came out of nowhere like Coastal did last season to have such a successful season. Kansas had its 2007 run when they were inches away from the Big 12 title game and possibly the BCS championship, but after that, the list is not very long.
The challenge for Jamey Chadwell will be to defy history and not experience a backslide as a program and show that the Chanticleers are here to stay. As long as Chadwell is still at Myrtle Beach, that possibility is going to exist.
One huge thing that Coastal Carolina is going to have working in its favor is the schedule. While the Chanticleers do have a trip to App State to worry about, they avoid fellow Sun Belt contender Louisiana in the regular season and they have the softest non-conference schedule amongst possible top 25 teams.
Coastal Carolina football has the Citadel, Kansas, Buffalo, and UMass in the non-conference and the Sun Belt teams outside of App State have some major questions that they need to answer.
The only bad thing about this kind of schedule is that it could be held against the Chanticleers when it comes to challenging for a spot in a New Years Six game. Either way, Coastal is going to be one of the more intriguing teams to watch, just as it was last season.
