Florida football notched a fairly easy win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night and here are three hot takes about the Gators after Week one.

Unlike some of the other top-ranked teams in the SEC, Florida football didn’t open the season against a ranked opponent but the Gators were still impressive in a 35-14 win over Florida Atlantic.

The final score is even a little misleading. Florida football won the game by 21 points but built a 28-0 lead before Florida Atlantic finally got on the board in the fourth quarter.

The defense was stellar and the running game was productive but the quarterback play left something to be desired and that’s where we are begin with hot takes from Florida football’s win.

A possible QB controversy

Head coach Dan Mullen says that Florida football doesn’t have any kind of quarterback controversy but Emory Jones wasn’t exactly sharp in his debut as the starting quarterback.

Jones was 17-for-27 for 113 yards and while he did throw a touchdown and ran for 74 yards on 10 rushing attempts, he also threw two interceptions. It wasn’t exactly the debut Florida football fans were hoping for and Jones has work to do in order to live up to the preseason hype.

Anthony Richardson, on the other hand, led Florida football in rushing, thanks to a 74-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He ran for 160 yards on just seven carries, meaning his other six attempts still racked up 86 yards.

Richardson was just 3-for-8 passing for 40 yards though. The passing game was always going to be a work in progress and while you can expect Jones to improve if he doesn’t, Richardson is waiting in the wings.

Either way, both add something dynamic to a running game that’s loaded with talent.
