College Football 2021: Score predictions for biggest games of Week 3
By Ryan Kay
Indiana started the season ranked but lost badly to Iowa on the road. The Hoosiers bounced back the following week by defeating FCS opponent 56-14. Cincinnati on the other hand undefeated Miami (OH) and Murray State easily at home.
This will be the Bearcats’ first road game of the season and first real test. Indiana will look to make a statement and win this game on a late field goal by a score of 20-17.
Virginia Tech surprised some in the college football world with a gritty home victory over previously ranked North Carolina in Week 1. The Hokies defeated Middle Tennessee of Conference USA to remain undefeated at 2-0.
West Virginia lost its first game that was on the road against Maryland but defeated FCS opponent LIU by a convincing score of 66-0.
This is a home game for the Mountaineers and this is Virginia Tech’s first road game of the season. Look for West Virginia to score a late fourth-quarter touchdown to win the game by a final score of 31-27.
Michigan State’s offense struggled last season but transfer running back Kenneth Walker III has been a huge spark to the Spartans offense leading Michigan State to a convincing road victory over Northwestern in Week 1 play. The Spartans followed that win up with a dominant home victory over Youngstown State.
In Week 1, Miami played Alabama on a neutral field and the Hurricanes’ offense and defense struggled against the Crimson Tide in a lopsided season-opening loss. The Hurricanes were losing at halftime to Appalachian State and needed a field goal with just two minutes left to give Miami a two-point win at home.
Michigan State is the popular pick this week and for good reason. Walker will have a similar type of game against the Hurricanes as he did against Northwestern and the Spartans will prevail holding off a late fourth-quarter surge by Miami to win 34-27.
East Carolina’s record doesn’t show that they are actually a decent team with the potential to win some quality games. The Pirates fell behind early to Appalachian State for their season opener but played well in the second half before losing to the Mountaineers 33-19.
In their second game, they hosted South Carolina from the SEC. They were leading the Gamecocks 14-7 at the half and South Carolina needed a last-second field goal to win the game by a final score of 20-17.
Marshall opened up with a 49-7 road victory at Navy and the following week beat North Carolina Central 44-10 to start the season undefeated at 2-0.
This game seems like the Thundering Herd will win easily at home but East Carolina is looking for the upset and the Pirates win this game on a last-second field goal to defeat Marshal by a final score of 23-21.
Utah had an easy job of defeating Weber State an FCS opponent at home. Their second game was a road game against their in-state rival BYU. Against the Cougars, the Utes trailed BYU 16-7 at the half and then the Cougars scored a touchdown in the third to put the game out of reach. Utah ended up losing the game 26-17 and they look to bounce back against San Diego State.
The Aztecs opened up the season with a 28-10 win over New Mexico State. Their second game was the more impressive performance as they went on the road and defeated Pac-12 foe Arizona. San Diego State led 35-7 at halftime and won the game 38-14.
The game between Utah and San Diego State will be played in San Diego. The Aztecs are not getting the respect they deserve and they will receive it when they defeat Utah 21-17.
