Dan Mullen just wasn’t cutting it with Florida football this season and after dropping to Missouri in overtime in Week 12, the Gators decided to part ways with the head coach.

The lack of success this season was surprising seeing as he led the Gators to the SEC title game last season and was in the playoff hunt until late in the season when they lost to LSU at home. He came close to upsetting Alabama in the conference championship, but his team fell short. The future seemed bright despite the fact that his team would be losing a ton of veteran talent.

Down Kyle Trask, Kyle Pitts, and Kadarius Toney this season, Mullen’s team struggled. He tried to save his job by firing Todd Grantham in the first week of November, but the defense just never improved. Plus, the offense just didn’t look right all year long.

A 20-13 loss at Kentucky began the downward spiral this season. The Gators turned around and shut out Vanderbilt 42-0 before losing to LSU 49-42. They then lost to Georgia by 27, South Carolina by 23, gave up 52 points to Samford, and then lost to Missouri in overtime. Four straight SEC losses and an ugly win against an FCS team led to this firing.

Florida has too much pride to continue to sink again. It’s already close to rock-bottom this season and it’ll have a chance to rebound with a home-run hire this offseason.

There are some top candidates out there that make sense, but in order to avoid the next Will Muschamp or Jim McElwain, the Gators need to target these four guys.
