Billy Napier is already getting to work on Florida football’s roster for the 2022 season and he should take a long, hard look at the portal.

Florida football’s season ended on a sour note and while 2021 was a nightmare, fans have to be breathing a sigh of relief knowing that it’s finally over.

Moving on from Dan Mullen seemed like the right move after such a poor season despite making the SEC title game last year and hiring Billy Napier was a home run. The coaching change has caused some attrition as multiple players have announced their transfers and after a loss to UCF in their bowl game, the Gators can focus on who to replace them with.

Napier is likely going to be active in the transfer portal this offseason, as he should be.

Which early transfer portal entrants should Napier target?

Florida is losing a ton up front on the defensive line so why not target one of the best transfers currently in the portal? Some of the best transfers actually come from smaller schools and even the FCS and that’s exactly the case for Jared Verse.

The Albany defensive lineman was a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award which is given to the FCS’ top freshman after racking up 22 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and four sacks during the spring season.

This past fall, however, he had a much larger sample size with Albany, accumulating 31 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, and 13 quarterback hurries. He would be a monster addition for Florida up front and he’d have multiple years of eligibility left.

Verse has already officially visited a handful of schools and he’s getting interest from programs like Houston, Tennessee, LSU, Florida State, Oklahoma, USC, Arkansas, and UCLA.

Florida has offered and there seems to be mutual interest here.
