Big 12 Football: 3 most overrated head coaches heading into 2022
3. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State
“I’m a man, I’m 40.”
Mike Gundy is known for one of the best post-game rants of all time, but he gets a ton of credit for being an above-average coach. I think he’s a solid coach and a good fit for Oklahoma State, but there are some people who would be willing to say he’s one of the 10 best in college football.
I don’t think that’s the case.
Oklahoma State isn’t exactly the easiest place to win, but he’s 149-69 in 17 years with the Cowboys. He also has a 91-56 record in Big 12 play and he’s been able to win 10-plus games seven times over his nearly two-decade tenure, but he has just one conference title. Being at a school for 17 years and winning the conference just one time is a little disappointing.
Gundy has won two more division titles, including this past season when he came close to winning his second conference crown, but lost to Baylor in the title game. He still finished 12-2 and earned himself an even longer leash.
Oklahoma State will never fire Gundy (which it shouldn’t) but I think he’s already reached his ceiling.
