4. Iowa State Cyclones

Matt Campbell came under fire a little bit in 2021 after his uber-talented Iowa State team that was supposed to contend for a Big 12 title not only fell short of that goal but barely made a bowl game, going 7-6 to end the year.

Campbell is considered one of the better coaches in college football, but he was criticized heavily in 2021 for his lack of success on the field and then his shocking quote where he told reporters that “winning the Big 12 was never my goal.”

That’s just not what you want to hear.

But I think Campbell is a good enough coach that he’ll find a way to turn things around even after losing Brock Purdy, Charlie Kolar, and Breece Hall. These guys will be tough to replace, but I think Iowa State has enough talent to make up for those departures with Hunter Dekkers projected to start at quarterback, Jirehl Brock getting a chance at running back, and the receiving corps looking solid.

Also, the defense was one of the best in the Big 12 last year and it should be on par with that in 2022.

This team has the tools to contend in the Big 12 and it will do just that.
