Nebraska football added a pair of commitments over the weekend to the 2023 recruiting class and some elite prospects are also trending the Huskers’ way.

There were and are a lot of questions about whether Scott Frost can deliver as Nebraska football head coach. But the way the Huskers have been recruiting lately is definitely a positive sign.

For starters, the Huskers were a big player in the transfer portal and signed a top-10 class of players who can help win games immediately in Lincoln next year. Nebraska football added two quarterbacks and even after spring ball, reinforced the defensive line with a number of additions.

Now that momentum is starting to translate to high school recruits and the 2023 class. Jaidyn Doss committed to Nebraska Football last Friday and he’s now the top verbal commitment in the class at No. 492 overall.

The Huskers also picked up a verbal commitment this weekend from Brock Knutson, out of Scottsbluff, an O-lineman who is ranked sixth in the state for the 2023 class, as well as No. 712 overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings.

It’s true that Nebraska football doesn’t have any four-star commitments in the 2023 class, but that’s going to change according to some expert projections and even so, Frost is off to a really good start having gotten commitments from four of the state’s top nine players.

That’s what Nebraska football should be about. The Huskers have to recruit beyond Nebraska and that will always be true. Tom Osborne taught us that. But this program also means something more to people from Nebraska and it’s important to own the state, which hasn’t happened in recent recruiting cycles.

Nebraska football recruiting in-state at a different level

This one feels different and Nebraska football is now trending heavily with top in-state recruit Malachi Coleman.

Coleman is an athletic freak. He’s 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, and is being recruited as both a wide receiver and an edge rusher. He visited Nebraska football officially this weekend and since then, the Huskers have been trending with crystal ball projections (four total). They also have a 98-percent chance to win his commitment according to On3’s prediction machine.

That would be a massive win for Scott Frost and company, but the Huskers are trending as the favorite for commitments with multiple prospects of the four-star variety. Amir Herring, a four-star offensive lineman from Michigan is another, and also fresh off a visit, top-100 wideout Omarion Miller, who just de-committed from LSU, has received three crystal ball projections to Nebraska.

The Huskers also have a 99-percent chance of winning his commitment according to the On3 prediction machine. He’s 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, and is ranked 97th. Steve Wiltfong, 247 sports top recruiting analyst also just projected him to wind up in Lincoln, thanks in large part to the incredible job done by Mickey Joseph — a home-run hire for Frost.

Last but not least, Maverick Noonan is also trending hard with expert picks to Nebraska. Five experts from 247 have projected him to commit to Nebraska and the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder out of Elkhorn South is the No. 2 prospect in the state.

So it would be another huge addition and would give the Huskers commitments from six of the top nine players in the state. Add that to the fact that Nebraska is now firmly leading with multiple four-star recruits and this class is shaping up as one of Frost’s best.
