Texas A&M Football: Can King carry the Aggies to a successful 2022?

The Aggie Offense: King, Achane, Smith, and Some Question Marks
It took until a week before the first game, but the Aggies have a starter at quarterback and it is third-year man Haynes King who was named the starter last year before being injured against Colorado and being forced to sit the rest of the year.
Now, it is his show starting Saturday against Sam Houston State and the Aggie faithful are looking for a strong 2022 campaign after he beat out talented freshman Connor Weigman and LSU transfer Max Johnson for this starting spot.
Some still think that Johnson will end up the starter before the season’s end, but right now it is Haynes King who has been with Jimbo since the start of his Aggie career. We will see how he fairs against an inferior opponent in SHSU when he threw three interceptions against the likes of Kent State just a year ago to open the 2021 season.
Now, outside of the quarterback position, the Aggies have two constants- Devon Achane and Ainais Smith. Achane is likely one of — if not the — fastest player in college football right now and as the Aggies starting running back that is welcomed.
He steps up in Isaiah Spiller’s place who left for the NFL and I would not be surprised if he finished among the top of the SEC in yards this season. Ainias Smith is a senior leader on this team that has been as versatile as anyone in the country. He will be important this season for the Ags as they try to piece together a receiver room.
The question is now who fills out the receiver group and who protects Haynes King and makes the big holes for Achane to run through.
True freshman Evan Stewart has made noise in fall practice as has senior Chase Lane. There are other guys like Moose Mohammad, Noah Thomas, and Chris Russell who are young but may be too good to keep off the field. Then there is senior Jalen Preston who came on against LSU that may finally be turning a corner in his Aggie career.
On the line, there are question marks as well. Bryce “The Mountain” Foster was in track mode over spring ball and other guys were working in his absence. Is it possible he gets dethroned in his sophomore year by someone else working hard? I’m not so sure, but that is a rumor circling during fall camp that Fisher has not put to rest. All he has said is that he feels that both he and Micahel Wyckoff have been good in fall camp and he would be okay with either starting at center.
Then there is the true freshman Kam Dewberry who hails from the same place that former Aggie OL Kenyon Green came from and let me tell you, they know how to make them down there in Atascocita. How long till he sees the field?
This Aggie offense finally has the depth and the ability to make this thing go. This was a team that was 11th in the SEC last year in total offense, averaging 392 yards and 29 points per game. There is no reason that shouldn’t improve with their choice at quarterback now playing and a slew of new talent mixing with the old ready-to-dominate a pretty decent schedule.
