Wisconsin football: 3 takeaways from 2022 Guaranteed Rate Bowl win
1. Wisconsin is a good quarterback away from being really good
All season long, it felt like Wisconsin’s quarterback position was holding it back. The defense was good and the run game was solid but the quarterback play was lacking.
Graham Mertz entered the transfer portal and Chase Wolf got the nod to start for the Badgers in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. He didn’t need to do too much as the defense was suffocating and the duo of Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi in the backfield was too much for Oklahoma State to handle, but he still played OK, passing for 116 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-26 passing.
OK just isn’t going to cut it if Wisconsin plans on making it back to the Big Ten title game any time soon.
Luckily for the Badgers, they’re bringing in former top-150 recruit and Oklahoma transfer Nick Evers next season. He should undoubtedly win the starting job and give the offense its best quarterback in years. Luke Fickell has to be ecstatic about Evers’ potential.
If Evers is as good as expected, the Badgers are going to immediately be one of the best teams in the Big Ten in 2023.
