3. Michigan

Many people thought that Michigan football was the team poised to give Georgia a run for its money in 2022, but the Wolverines never got the chance after being upset by TCU.

J.J. McCarthy picked a really bad time to have an off day. He did make some stellar throws to keep Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl, but the pick-6s and fumble at the one were costly. Michigan basically gave away two touchdowns and failed twice to score any points after having first-and-goal twice.

At any rate, McCarthy will be back along with Donovan Edwards and 2022 Heisman Trophy contender Blake Corum. The offensive line will lose some pieces and the defense has suffered some key departures too.

Also, we don’t know if Jim Harbaugh will be coaching Michigan football next year, as he is once again flirting with the NFL. Signs are pointing toward a deal soon. If that happens and the Wolverines don’t suffer any other major departures, they should start the season in the top 3.

Michigan added a number of potential starters on offensive line in the transfer portal, as well as the No. 2 overall player in linebacker Ernest Hausmann. Five-star cornerback Will Johnson really came on at the end of the year and with its top three skill guys back on offense, including the quarterback, Michigan should a legit national title contender.

That is, of course, if it can retain Jim Harbaugh. If not, then all bets are off.
