The Ole Miss football program and Lane Kiffin have been looking for a quarterback in the transfer portal and Walker Howard is the perfect fit.

It was a bit of a surprise when former five-star quarterback Walker Howard announced he was leaving LSU and entering the transfer portal.

After all, Howard spent just one season with the Tigers. Yet, it was clear he wasn’t going to be the starter in 2023 after Jayden Daniels played exceptionally well in 2022 and announced that he was coming back.

So Walker Howard, who was ranked 40th overall in the 2022 recruiting class according to the 247 sports composite rankings but rated as a five-star by some services, is back on the market.

It didn’t take long for interest to take hold as Howard visited Ole Miss football and reportedly TCU over the weekend.

TCU seemed like it would be a great fit because there would be a chance for Walker Howard to win that starting job next season with Max Duggan graduating. The same could be said for Ole Miss football. I also thought Auburn would be a team in the mix too.

However, it looks like the visit to Ole Miss football has made an impact because Walker Howard started trending with crystal ball projections to the Rebels on Monday.

It’s notable because Chris Hummer, a national recruiting analyst for 247 sports put in a projection, as did an Ole Miss beat reporter, along with a TCU insider.

So if you have reporters from all angles putting in the same prediciton, it’s generally a pretty good sign of how things are going to go.

The Rebels had some interest in Spencer Sanders too and he would have been a one-year rental, so it was obvious Lane Kiffin wanted some competition for Jaxson Dart.

What makes Howard such a great fit, is that his career doesn’t have to be about just one season. I’m sure he would love to win the starting job wherever he goes, but he’s going to have four years of eligibility left.

He’s basically a freshman (redshirt) and Ole Miss football doesn’t land many five-star caliber quarterbacks out of high school. Dart was a solid get but he needs to be better. Maybe he will be this season, but either way, having someone to push him is essential.

Howard can definitely do that in addition to being the quarterback of the future for Ole Miss football. It makes a lot of sense. Quarterbacks are drawn to Lane Kiffin, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Howard pulled the trigger on a commitment relatively soon.
