USC football: 3 newcomers who’ll have the biggest impacts in 2023
Marshawn Lloyd is the type of player that can take over a backfield and lead an offense right away. He had a quiet two years at South Carolina, but he never really got the touches that he deserved. While he’s likely to split carries with Austin Jones, I do think he’s the more talented of the two backs and should probably get a bulk of the touches.
The former highly-touted recruit had 228 yards and a touchdown on just 3.6 yards per carry as a redshirt freshman in 2011 before improving quite a bit in 2022 with 573 yards and nine touchdowns on 5.2 yards per touch. He also had 18 catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns last season, showing he can be a dual-threat.
Lloyd is one of my favorite offensive transfers in the entire country and I think he’s going to improve that USC backfield immediately.
Could he rush for 1,000 yards while splitting carries with Jones? Maybe, but I do believe he’ll have his career-best yards-per-carry average in 2023.
I’m very high on Lloyd, as USC fans should also be.
