ULM football pushing for bowl berth in Terry Bowden’s third year
By Dante Pryor
How many games is ULM Football going to win this fall?
Sept. 2 vs. Army (L): The Warhawks had one of the worst rush defenses in the country in 2022. That gives the Black Knights the advantage in what should be a close game in the home opener.
Spet. 9 vs. Lamar (W): ULM gets an opportunity to lick its wounds and prep to go to College Station.
Sept. 16 at Texas A&M (L): The Aggies romp against an inferior opponent.
Sept. 30 vs. Appalachian State (L): The Warhawks open conference play at home with what could be a 50-50 game. The Mountaineers are looking to improve from an average 6-6 season. App State wins a close one.
Oct. 7 vs. South Alabama (L): The great Lee Corso would say this one will be closer than the experts think. ULM lost by seven points last year. Don’t be shocked if the Warhawks pull the upset in 2023.
Oct. 14 at Texas State (W): The Bobcats have a new head coach, G.J. Kinne. ULM won a close one last year and will do the same again this year.
Oct. 21 at Georgia Southern (W): ULM did not play Georgia Southern last year. The Eagles managed six wins last year. The Warhawks get the win here.
Oct. 28 vs. Arkansas State (W): The Red Wolves won one conference game last year against the Warhawks. ULM football gets the win back.
Nov. 4 at Southern Miss (W): The Golden Eagles’ win against the Warhawks got them to the postseason in 2022. ULM needs this win to have any chance to make a bowl.
Nov. 11 vs. Troy (L): This will be a challenging game against the Trojans and the best defense in the Sun Belt.
Nov. 18 at Mississippi (L): The Rebels win big against the Warhawks.
Nov. 25 at Louisiana (L): One determining factor to this game is how healthy ULM is after the Mississippi game.
Prediction 5-7, 4-4 Sun Belt
If there is one particular point of progress for the Warhawks in 2023, it is the number of 50-50 games on the schedule. The only actual losses on the schedule are A&M, Mississippi, and South Alabama. The Warhawks avoid most of the top of the conference. They don’t play Coastal Carolina or James Madison.
Their home opener against Army and the season finale against interstate rival Louisiana could be the determining factor as to whether or not ULM football goes bowling.
