Even with the Week 0 win over TCU in Ireland, a dark cloud has loomed over the North Carolina Tar Heels. General Manager and long-time Bill Belichick staffer Michael Lombardi has been on paid administrative leave since July 27th with very few answers.

The story finally got an update on Thursday afternoon when Michael Lombardi resigned from the job amid the investigation.

The decision to resign while the investigation remained underway raised even more questions. Then the bomb dropped on Thursday night as WRAL News revealed details of the investigation.

Michael Lombardi's investigation put Bill Belichick's future in question

The outside lawyers investigating the program, asking whether Steve Belichick used drugs on the job or provided them to at least 1 player, whether a member of the recruiting staff had an inappropriate relationship with a player, and about relationships between the assistant coaches and recruiting staff cast a dark cloud over the program.

Steve Belichick has been away on medical leave and didn't travel with the team for the season opener in North Carolina.

As of right now, these are all questions being asked by the attorney, and it's not clear what's true, but the questions even being asked have to raise red flags. If any of the questions being asked are true, it's a major black eye for the program and the school, which is far from what they hoped for when they hired the most respected head coach in NFL history.

Ever since Bill Belichick and Michael Lombardi arrived on campus, it's been a never ending saga for North Carolina. Between Bill Belichick's relationship and questions over Jordon Hudson's influence to questions over Michael Lombardi traveling to Saudi Arabia for fundraising, and much more, the school has dealt with a ton of negative press.

While Bill Belichick showed signs of progress with North Carolina’s season-opening win, his time in Chapel Hill could come to an end much sooner than anyone expected. The ongoing investigation could ultimately leave the program with no choice but to part ways with Belichick and his staff. The question now may be whether North Carolina fires Belichick for cause, allowing the program to avoid paying his buyout.

Details will continue to emerge as the investigation progresses, but at this point, there's a major black cloud over the program.
