Week 1 of the college football season is nearly in the books, as only Florida State and SMU will face off on Monday Night. The game gave everyone a chance to get a look at their new rosters and new head coaches, with some meeting the hype while others flopped in their debuts. After an offseason filled with excitement, several transfer QBs underwhelmed in their debuts, making their team question what lies ahead.
The 4 transfer QBs who disappointed the most in Week 1
Drew Mestemaker - Oklahoma State
The Oklahoma State Cowboys had a ton of hype coming into the season as Eric Morris brought most of his North Texas team with him to Stillwater. Drew Mestemaker was the most hyped of the group after a stellar season, but Tulsa may have instantly killed any buzz. Mestemaker went just 29 for 49 for 241 yards and a touchdown with a pair of interceptions, and with Oregon next on the schedule, the games are only getting harder.
Byrum Brown - Auburn
Auburn fans who were hoping for the Byrum Brown they saw at USF got him; the only issue is they got the version that struggled against Power 4 opponents. Brown finished the game 21-30 for 193 yards with 3 interceptions while taking 5 sacks. The stats are much worse than they appear as Brown had just 92 air yards on the 30 throws, and Auburn will need him to push the ball down the field when SEC play arrives.
DJ Lagway - Baylor
Dave Aranda took a chance on DJ Lagway in a critical year for both, and the early results show that he still has a long way to go in his development. Lagway completed just 50% of his passes on 54 attempts, throwing a pair of touchdowns, but he also turned the ball over twice. The Baylor defense looks much improved, but if Lagway can't play at a high level it could mark the end of the Dave Aranda era.
Jaden Craig - TCU Horned Frogs
Losing Josh Hoover to Indiana was always going to be tough to overcome, but Sonny Dykes seemingly liked that Jaden Craig didn't turn the ball over often. In Week 0, Jaden Craig was clearly a major step back from Josh Hoover, passing for just 175 yards while taking 3 sacks. TCU is going to need Craig to take a few more risks, but the offense should improve once Jordan Dwyer returns from injury.
