The Syracuse Orange are currently building up towards what many hope will be a bounceback season for Fran Brown’s team. As Spring practices are underway, Brown and his staff are tasked with gelling a mixture of incoming transfers, freshmen, and the returning players. Among everyone, the Syracuse Orange fans were more excited to hear about freshman wide receiver Calvin Russell than any other player.
It’s not often that schools are able to lure a 5-star wide receiver out of the Miami area, especially to Syracuse. Instead, Syracuse was able to land the two-sport star giving the Orange an exciting weapon to build the offense around for at least the next three seasons.
This week, Syracuse was given devastating news as Calvin Russell tore his Achilles while in Spring practice. The delay to Calvin Russell’s career stings as he was flashing in Spring practice, and could’ve been the first of many 5-stars for Fran Brown.
Fran Brown’s timeline for Calvin Russell gives Syracuse a glimmer of hope
Whenever you hear of a torn Achilles, you typically think of the timeline for recovery being around a year which gave everyone the belief that Calvin Russell would miss the entire season. On Wednesday, Fran Brown gave everyone hope for a quicker return than anyone could’ve expected as Russell could return in late October or early November.

"You'll see him on the field this season, just probably not at the beginning of the season. He's gonna probably heal pretty fast, his was a little different from talking to the doctors...he was killing it in… pic.twitter.com/yqEwWmdhTP
Returning in October would mark a 6 month recovery for Calvin Russell which would be truly incredible. The hope for Syracuse fans and Russell will be getting him on the field this season as he’s certainly talented enough.
While Calvin Russell could’ve had a major impact on the season, his development is still a long term priority. After the injury, even getting a month out of Russell in the offense could be beneficial for him long term as he looks to develop into a 1st Round caliber talent for the Orange.
