The NCAA has reached a place in recent years where it seems that none of the rules that once scared programs are enforceable. NIL, Revenue Sharing, and the Transfer Portal have made it more beneficial for players than ever to be in college football, and we've seen the players treat it as such. We've seen countless players go to court seeking additional eligibility, and as the NCAA moved to the 5-for-5 model, it's only getting messier.
Earlier in the week, a ruling was handed down in Louisiana that granted several players, including those who were currently in NFL camps, eligibility for the 2026 season. It didn't take long for Lane Kiffin to use the ruling to his advantage.
Dae'Quan Wright waived by the Browns setting up return to college football
Earlier in the week, it started to be reported that players who were in NFL Training Camps were hoping to get cut so they could re-enter college football with the new ruling. On Saturday, it became clear that tight end Dae'Quan Wright was one of them as Browns head coach Todd Monken called the situation bizarre while sharing that Lane Kiffin called him earlier in the week.

Implies that’s why Lane Kiffin called him
“Man, that shit is crazy…I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out a week ago. Now I know. Shit, I didn’t know, now I know. I didn’t call him back, guess I should’ve”… pic.twitter.com/xnjNOD7c4K
It appears that the reason Lane Kiffin was calling was because he wanted a reunion with his former Ole Miss tight end. On Sunday, the Browns waived Dae'Quan Wright, and if he clears waivers he will be joining the LSU Tigers for the 2026 season.
History: the Browns are waiving tight end Dae’Quan Wright and, if he clears waivers, he has an agreement in place for the 2026 season to play for LSU, per agents Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln.

Wright is believed to be the first player who could play for an NFL team, and then… pic.twitter.com/3MLKNFYInY
The move is truly bizarre, and just another showing of how broken college sports have become in recent years. Dae'Quan Wright has been on two NFL teams this offseason, yet he'll somehow return to college football with the first games less than a week away.
Dae'Quan Wright returning to play for LSU makes perfect sense as a landing spot given that he just played for Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weis Jr at Ole Miss. Wright will be familiar with the playbook, and will likely play a ton after catching 39 passes for 635 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. LSU has a 1st round caliber tight end in Trey'Dez Green, but this move likely means Green will spend a ton of time split out wide.
Lane Kiffin and LSU are no strangers to making controversial headlines, and this latest headline shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. Lane Kiffin has shown he clearly has no regard for public perception and is always going to put himself before the greater good in college football.
Coaches have every chance of policing the rules they don't like, but when you have coaches like Lane Kiffin signing players who were in NFL Training Camp, it's clear that it won't work for everyone else to sit out.
Dae'Quan Wright committing to the Tigers is far from the last we will hear in this story, as the NCAA will certainly attempt to get the ruling revoked. The SEC also has interconference transfer rules that could stop the move from Ole Miss to LSU, which means we should have an eventful week ahead as parties look to stop the move.
