Week 2 of the college football season is in the books, and while the sport has changed, this weekend proved that the old school chaos fans love still exists in this wonderful sport. The weekend was filled with marquee matchups, shocking upsets, and horrible performances that will shape the race for the National Championship. While plenty of teams lost the weekend, 5 head coaches and players stand out as the biggest losers of the weekend.
Ranking the 5 biggest losers of Week 2
5. Brent Key - Head Coach - Georgia Tech
The resurgence of Georgia Tech as a program has been an exciting storyline over the last two seasons, with Brent Key getting a ton of credit, but in the first two games without OC Buster Faulkner, we now know who drove the success. Georgia Tech is off to a 0-2 start with losses to Colorado and Tennessee, and the offense has struggled to get anything going. This looks like it could be a long season for the Yellow Jackets, as Key clearly doesn't have the players or coaches to work the same magic we've seen in recent years.
4. Greg Schiano - Head Coach - Rutgers
If there's a race to be the first head coach fired, that's the only thing Greg Schiano may win after an 0-2 start to the season. There was hope that this new-look defense would lead Rutgers to competing in the Big Ten, but after losses to UMass and Boston College, it's hard to find wins on the Scarlet Knights' schedule. Greg Schiano's buyout is manageable, and it may reach the point where a financially challenged Rutgers decides it's more expensive to keep Schiano and continue losing than it is to fire him.
3. John Mateer - Quarterback - Oklahoma
Last season, Oklahoma had a defense capable of winning it all, but the play of John Mateer was a major setback. After everyone talked about Bryce Underwood’s struggles to start the week, John Mateer was the quarterback that looked like he didn’t belong, costing Oklahoma the game. The Sooners are loaded on defense, but they’ll have a low ceiling until Mateer proves he can win big games.
2. Ryan Day - Head Coach - Ohio State
Through 3 quarters, Ohio State looked unstoppable as it looked like the Buckeyes may pick up a massive win over Texas to start the season once again. Instead, the Buckeyes offense went stagnant in the 4th quarter, and the defense crumbled allowing Texas to go on a 21-0 run to win the game. The Buckeyes are far too talented to blow a 20 point lead, and Ryan Day now has games against Oregon, Indiana, Iowa, USC, and Michigan he’ll need to navigate without suffering two losses to make the Playoff.
1. Dan Lanning - Head Coach - Oregon
The Oregon Ducks have Dan Lanning everything a coach could ask for, paying a ton to bring the nucleus of a College Football Playoff team back and surrounding it with high priced talent. After looking shaky in Week 1, the Ducks imploded against Oklahoma State as two tipped Drew Mestemaker passes leading to touchdowns for the Ducks were the only thing keeping this game from being a blowout. Oregon clearly has massive flaws, and Dan Lanning likely made mistakes with both coordinator hires, and he may end up wasting the most talented team he’ll ever have.
