This weekend saw many of the Nation's best teams on the bye which limited how much movement we can see in the race for the major awards. The Heisman Trophy race has become a wide open battle as nearly anyone can win the award. Most of the front runners coming into the season haven't lived up to the expectations which always makes for a fun race.
While a ton of great players were on the bye, some of the players who did play this weekend used their games to build their resume. After week 6, it's mostly the familiar names but, one new face has arrived at the front of the Heisman Trophy race.
Ranking the 5 best Heisman candidates after Week 6
Fernando Mendoza and the Indiana Hoosiers spent the weekend on the bye after their first shaky game of the season. Mendoza used the first 5 games of the season to build a stellar resume with 1,208 yards and 16 touchdowns with just 1 interception while rushing for 102 yards and 2 scores. This weekend, Mendoza could have a early Heisman moment if he can lead the Hoosiers to a win on the road over Dante Moore and the Oregon Ducks.
The biggest riser in the Heisman Trophy race during Week 6 is Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin who put on a stellar performance against Minnesota. Sayin carved the Minnesota defense for 326 yards and 3 touchdowns as he and the Buckeyes got whatever they wanted. The biggest reason to start believing in Julian Sayin is the fact that it looks like the trianing wheels are off and with weapons like Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, Sayin can start to post incredible numbers.
All Ty Simpson has done since his shaky performance against Florida State is start to look like one of the best quarterbacks in the Country. Simpson added another 2 touchdowns but, did throw an interception bringing his totals to 15 total scores with just one pick. Alabama plays a loaded schedule and if Simpson can keep leading his team to victory, he has the weapons to go on a run for the Heisman.
The Miami Hurricanes picked up another signature win on Saturday Night as Carson Beck and the Canes knocked off Florida State. Beck was in total control for Miami passing for 241 yards and 4 touchdowns as his weapons keep making massive plays after the catch. The Canes have played a tough schedule to start the season, and Beck now enters the stretch of the year where he can post insane numbers to better build his campaign.
Dante Moore didn't get a chance to add to his Heisman campaign this weekend as Oregon was on the bye but, he does have the signature moment of leading the Ducks to an overtime win in Happy Valley. Moore has been stellar to start the season with 1,210 yards and 14 touchdowns with just 1 interception while rushing for 122 yards. Moore will have another chance to win a big game next weekend against Indiana but, after that he should be able to drop Heisman level numbers on a weaker slate of Big Ten opponents.
