After opening the season with a loss at home to UMass, it instantly became clear that this Rutgers team had a ton of flaws. On Friday Night, Rutgers made the trip to Boston College for the annual Red Bandana game honoring September 11th hero Welles Crowther. Beating Boston College on the special night was always going to be hard, but Rutgers practically handed the Eagles the game.
After Dylan Lonergan's nightmare game against UMass, Rutgers was onto their second quarterback of the season as AJ Surace got the start due to injury. AJ Surace flashed a ton, throwing for 3 touchdowns, but with the highs came incredible lows as he threw 4 interceptions while the offense turned the ball over on downs twice.
On a night when Boston College made a ton of mistakes with a pair of interceptions and a fumble late in the 4th quarter, Greg Schiano's team still managed to lose the game. Failing to beat UMass and Boston College becomes increasingly alarming when you look at what lies ahead for the Scarlet Knights.
Greg Schiano's team will only be expected to beat Howard, while games against top 25 ranked USC, Indiana, and Penn State all lie ahead. Add in the strength of the other teams in the Big Ten, and it's impossible to find a way where this team finishes above .500, and it's almost impossible to find a scenario where they win 3 games.
The loss drops Greg Schiano to 99-110 at Rutgers, and he's just 31-43 in his second tenure leading the Scarlet Knights. If Rutgers were to fire Greg Schiano at the end of the season, it would cost roughly $17,296,875, which may be hard to stomach for one of the lowest spenders in the Big Ten.
The Scarlet Knights now have a decision to make as they'll need to decide if they're content with living at the bottom of the Big Ten or if they want to start taking football seriously. The school has had well documented financial issues in the athletic department, but if fans start to skip out on the games, it may be more expensive to keep Schiano.
