Week 5 of the college football season is in the books as races for the College Football Playoff are starting to become clear. While some teams are starting to establish themselves as contenders, the pretenders are being exposed and are quickly proving they could be in for a disaster season. Based on what we've seen in the expanded Playoff era, taking a second loss this early in the season makes it almost impossible to play for the National Championship.
While Week 5 wasn't filled with the biggest games it likely ended several Heisman Trophy campaigns, head coaching tenures, and College Football Playoff contenders.
The 5 biggest lossers of College Football's Week 5
Shane Beamer - Head Coach - South Carolina Gamecocks
The race to be the first head coach fired is starting to be dominated by Shane Beamer as Saturday may have been his last game. The Gamecocks blew a 17 point lead, getting walked off by Kentucky on a game winning 2-point conversion in overtime. Beamer has just 1 SEC win dating back to November of 2024, and it's becoming very clear his 2024 season was a fluke.
Michigan Wolverines
After Michigan picked up a massive win over Oklahoma, the Wolverines have set out to ensure they won't make the College Football Playoff. Following the Iowa loss, the offense looked awful once again against Minnesota as Bryce Underwood threw a pair of interceptions. The Wolverines' schedule is only getting tougher, with 4 ranked opponents looming down the stretch as making the Playoff now seems impossible.
Dave Portnoy
Michigan's loss was just another low point in a rough weekend for Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy. This weekend started with the news that Dave Portnoy and Barstool Sports would no longer be on Fox's Big Noon Kickoff, which Portnoy blamed on complaints from Ohio State. Add in the fact that Portnoy was one of the driving forces behind bringing Bryce Underwood to Ann Arbor, and it's been a less than stellar stretch for the outspoken Michigan superfan.
Penn State Nittany Lions
Coming into the season, many called Penn State's schedule easy and declared that the Nittany Lions could contend for the College Football Playoff in Year 1 under Matt Campbell. Instead, the Nittany Lions have dropped back-to-back "easy games" after falling to Northwestern on Friday Night. Rocco Becht has been shaky for a quarterback with as much experience as he has, while the defense has massive flaws that could lead to this being a miserable season to start the Matt Campbell era.
Jadan Baugh's Heisman hopes
After a dominant showing against Ole Miss, Jadan Baugh entered Saturday with the best chance to snap the running back Heisman drought. Florida's run in the top 10 will be short-lived, as the Gators were upset by Missouri when their rushing attack was shut down. Baugh was held to just 13 yards on 12 carries in the type of performance that will instantly crush a Heisman hopeful, similar to how Alabama ended Leonard Fournette's Heisman campaign.
