While the games kick off this weekend in college football, the drama is still operating as if the offseason just started. The NCAA’s decision to move to the 5-for-5 eligibility model has led to the athletes who started their careers in 2022 to push for another season in college sports regardless of their current status. When reports started to leak that players on NFL Training Camp rosters may try to return to college football, a wild storm began.
Lane Kiffin and LSU are constantly in the news for better or worse, and decided to take their first shot at landing former college stars. The Tigers seemingly added a tight end and a defensive tackle in former Ole Miss Rebels Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. The SEC and Big Ten along with several other leagues swiftly acted to put rules in place punishing teams if athletes met certain criteria.
While some players won’t be allowed to return, others will be, including former Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos.
Former FSU QB Thomas Castellanos commits to Texas Tech
When Thomas Castellanos was granted his temporary restraining order, clearing a path for him to return, the school that was instantly linked to the former Florida State star was Texas Tech. On Wednesday Afternoon, the Red Raiders finally acted, adding Castellanos just over a week away from their first game of the season.
Thomas Castellanos seemingly will be allowed to play, even if the Big 12 follows the same rules the SEC and Big Ten adopted as he went undrafted, and was invited to Dolphins Mini Camp, but never signed a contract with the team.
The move gives Texas Tech a great insurance plan in case of injury given that starting quarterback Will Hammond is coming off a torn ACL. The Red Raiders thought that they landed arguably the best quarterback in the Transfer Portal in Brendan Sorsby, but his gambling scandal will keep him out of football for at least this season.
After starting his career at UCF, Castellanos became a star at Boston College before transferring to play for Florida State last season. Castellanos led the Seminoles to a Week 1 upset of Alabama, passing for 2,760 yards and rushing for 557 yards with 24 total touchdowns on the season.
The move allows Castellanos the chance to play quarterback again if Will Hammond is still dealing with his injury or if he’s injured during the season. The bigger impact it will have is giving Castellanos the chance to put tape out playing wide receiver where he was willing to play in the NFL, and may best fit at the next level.
