Samaje Perine Breaks Melvin Gordon’s Record as Oklahoma Beats Kansas
Congratulations Melvin Gordon. Your record stood for a grand total of one week.
Okay, that’s unfair, because Gordon is still at the top of our Heisman trophy race based on what he has done all season. But Oklahoma Sooners running back Samaje Perine broke the Wisconsin Badgers running back’s record of 408 yards per game with a 427-yard game and 5 touchdowns on 34 carries.
Perine was the star from the start as the Sooners beat the Jayhawks 44-7. In the first quarter, he had a 49-yard run for a touchdown. In the second quarter, he had runs of 33 and 34 yards for touchdowns. In the third quarter, he had a 66-yard touchdown run and a 27-yard touchdown run.
So on his touchdown runs alone, Perine had 5 carries for 209 yards.
Of course, this is nowhere near as impressive as what Gordon did. Perine’s was against a pathetic Jayhawks team, and we all know that the Big 12 doesn’t play defense. Meanwhile, Gordon did it to Nebraska, who was a Top 20 team at the time.

However, we don’t want to ruin the celebration behind Perine. Losing all of their big games, Bob Stoops and the Oklahoma Sooners haven’t had much to cheer about this year given how high the expectations were at the beginning of the year.
And beating Kansas would usually not have been much to cheer about.
But to do it on a record-setting day is special and makes for some good memories.
As for the Sooners, they are still 8-3, and although this season is still a disappointment, they still have a great chance to finish the year on a good note. If they can beat Oklahoma State and win the bowl game, 10-3 with a Top 25 finish isn’t terrible.
The story today, though, is not about Oklahoma’s win. We knew that was coming. It’s about a superstar running back who should have been the full-time starter all year. Congratulations to Samaje Perine for a historic performance.
