Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners: Recent 5-Star Signing Day Busts
By Jerry Levi
There was a time when the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners ruled the college football landscape, both in recruiting and championships. Oklahoma won the national title for the 2000 season and Texas won for the 2005 season.
Since then there’s been somewhat of a drought in terms of even just winning a Big 12 title much less making it back to the Big Scene of the Saturday gridiron. Nowadays in the Big 12 folks are talking about Baylor, TCU, and Kansas State making headway into the league. The last time OU or Texas won an outright Big 12 title was in 2010 (Oklahoma).
So what gives? Where did it start going downhill for this Red River Gang?

Does anybody remember when the Sooners and Longhorns used to lay claim to Top 5 recruiting classes and 5 star blue chippers that couldn’t decide between the two? Now kids flock to Texas A&M, Alabama, and UCLA. Between OU and Texas, only the Longhorns were able to nab a 5 Star recruit this Signing Day (LB Malik Jefferson).
Maybe that’s a good thing, considering the most recent 5 star busts the Sooners and the Longhorns have produced. It’s no secret that the first half of this decade hasn’t been kind to either OU or Texas, save for a few moments of glory.
Gone are the days of Colt McCoy vs. Sam Bradford, replaced by the disappointments of Jevan Snead and Trevor Knight. All ballyhoo but no sustained dominance.
Let’s take a look at the biggest 5-star busts for Texas and Oklahoma over the past few years.
