Ohio State pulls Braxton Miller out of spring practice

Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller is working back from shoulder surgery but isn’t quite where he needs to be physically to get through everything at Buckeyes spring practice.

Braxton Miller is almost the forgotten man in the Ohio State quarterback competition with Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett filling more than admirably last season after he was lost for the year with shoulder surgery.

Miller has been the starter since his freshman year when Urban Meyer wasn’t even in Columbus yet and was working at ESPN but the fifth-year senior seems to have been cast aside in favor of the two younger prospects.

The quarterback race for Ohio State will heat up in the summer and fall when J.T. Barrett is fully healthy from his ankle surgery and Miller can be 100 percent healthy to join Jones in the mix to regain his job. But for the time being, Ohio State is being extra cautious with Miller in spring practice and has pulled him back from overdoing it this spring and risk a setback.

Ohio State doesn’t need Miller healthy for the spring and he doesn’t need to worry about learning the offense or working with the wide receivers and backs for Ohio State to be successful this year. They need him healthy for fall camp to push Jones and Barrett for the job, even if he doesn’t win the starting job.

I wouldn’t be too alarmed with today’s news about Miller because Ohio State has proven they can win a national championship without him, and they may have to do it again, but with Miller playing a different position if Meyer chooses to go young.
