On Sunday, Texas A&M wide receiver Laquvionte Gonzalez made an announcement that he was heading to Kansas, reuniting him with former Texas A & M wide receivers coach and new Kansas head coach David Beaty who was at College Station the past three seasons.
Measuring in at 5-foot-10, 165-pounds, Gonzalez simply did not fit into the equation for the Aggies, leaving him buried in the depth chart this spring.
The Cedar Hill, Texas native recorded five catches for 77 yards and a touchdown as a sophomore in the 2014 campaign. Those numbers were down from a very impressive 2013 campaign, when, as a true freshman, he caught 21 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown.
This will be a fresh start for the former Under Armor All-American, who had a tremendous high school career and was a highly-touted prospect. Labeled as a four-star recruit, the No. 6 overall wide receiver in the class of 2013 and the No. 20 overall prospect in his class from the state of Texas, the interest surrounding him was warranted.
At the time of his recruitment, Gonzalez received offers from the likes of Arkansas, Illinois, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss. He officially committed to the Aggies on March 8, 2012, and took an unofficial visit to College Station on March 23. He signed his letter of intent to the program on February 6, 2013 and enrolled in the school that July.
Now, it appears things have changed.
This is an excellent pick-up by the Jayhawks as it adds depth to the wide receiver position. Kansas is already pretty stacked at the position, but with the graduation of four seniors heading into the 2015 season, depth will be a key component for the program.
A program undergoing change received a pick-me-up Sunday, and it may lead to big things for the future.
