Croney and a friend were at another friend’s house when they found the handgun belonging to the father of the friend whose house they were at and he accidently shot himself in the hand. No other injuries were reported and the handgun was seized.
No charges were filed and Sergeant Joe Grubbs of the Bakersfield Police Department referred to the matter as an open and shut case.
Croney, a three-star recruit in the Cyclones 2015 class, rushed for 2,271 yards and 32 touchdowns as a senior. The 6-0, 210-pound running back has a chance to contribute right away as a freshman after leading rusher Aaron Wimberly graduated and his backup, DeVondrick Nealy, left the team in the offseason.
Neither Croney nor Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads were available for comment afterward.
I have a comment, however, because I wonder how careless can you be to mess around with a gun that it discharges and you shoot yourself in the hand?
Thankfully, Croney wasn’t injured more severely and thankfully he didn’t hurt either of his two friends he was with. Taking a bullet to the hand isn’t so bad when you consider the alternatives of what could have happened. It’s a painful lesson to learn for Croney who hopefully won’t be picking up any guns anytime soon.
