Hansen released a statement on Twitter:
"I have done a lot of thinking, talking with friend and family, and most importantly, praying. In the end I feel it is in my best interest to move on from the University of Oklahoma and continue my football career elsewhere. I can’t thank Coach Stoops, Coach Riley, and all the other coaches enough for how they have treated me during my time at OU. I would also like to thank my teammates for pushing me and allowing me to be part of the family. The university was a great experience and I appreciate the opportunity I had to proudly represent it. I wish nothing but the best for OU in the future. God Bless"
An Oklahoma native out of Edmond Santa Fe High School and son of former OU baseball player Dusty Hansen, the six foot three, 215 pounder was not expected to challenge for the Oklahoma starting quarterback job in 2015, even though he was the only quarterback to complete all his passes and throw no interceptions during April’s spring game. Even though Hansen only threw five passes during the spring scrimmage, many fans were excited by his arm strength and were looking for Hansen to compete for the backup job behind expected starter Baker Mayfield.
OU did not bring in a quarterback with the 2015 recruiting class, so lack of depth at the most important position on the field is now a huge issue looming large for the Sooners in 2015. The departures of running back Keith Ford, a former five star recruit, and now Hansen have to raise legitimate questions about the OU football program’s ability to retain players once they enter the program.
