The BYU Cougars may have crushed the hopes of Nebraska fans with a game-winning hail mary pass to take down the Cornhuskers 33-28, but that pass was thrown by backup quarterback Tanner Mangum, who will now step up to the starting job given the news on Taysom Hill.

Hill, who was injured with 10 minutes to play after he was hit by Nebraska linebacker Josh Banderas while scrambling from the pocket, re-aggravated a foot injury suffered on a 21-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

The Heisman candidate remained in the game for a number of plays before being taken back to the locker room in the second half. After the game, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall delivered the news that his senior playmaker would miss the rest of the season with the foot injury.

This is a big blow to the Cougars, who had aspirations of picking up where they left off last season when Hill suffered a broken leg while BYU was climbing the polls and undefeated. With one of the more difficult schedules in the nation, and no conference affiliation, it will almost certainly take an undefeated season for BYU to have a shot at cracking the New Year’s Six bowls.

The Cougars return home next week to welcome the No. 23 Boise State Broncos to LaVell Edwards Stadium. Kickoff scheduled for 10:15 pm ET.
