The Texas Tech Red Raiders thought they had pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year, until a little toe-tap after a deflected pass brought their dreams to a painful end.

It was predetermined by just about anyone who talks about college football that Texas Tech and TCU were going to score a

bunch

ungodly number of points…and they did. The final 55-52 score only gives a hint of how much offense there was in this game.

Combined, the two Big 12 rivals totaled 69 first downs, 142 yards in penalties, 10 lead changes and (are you sitting down?) 1,357 total yards – 895 via the pass and 462 on the ground.

Defense was optional, apparently.

In a wild and wooly see-saw affair, anything can happen, and anything pretty much did in this game. But the one thing that didn’t happen? Turnovers.

With all those yards, all those points, and all those offensive plays run, there wasn’t a single turnover by either team. That may be the most under-appreciated stat of the entire game.

TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin didn’t do his Heisman chances any harm with a 34 of 54, 485 yard, four touchdown performance, and he was practically matched by his opposition, Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 392 yards and two touchdowns. Someone should have called the NSA to let them know there was an aerial show going on in Lubbock.

But the end of a game like this could only end the way this game ended. A lass-ditch pass with time running out in the game, deflected and then caught by running back Aaron Green for the go-ahead and eventual winning score.

You have to see it to understand just how close this was to NOT being a touchdown. Green barely got his toes to brush against the turf.

So the Horned Frogs escaped disaster, but their ranking may suffer. The Red Raiders proved they are not a fluke, but they can’t defend the pass at all.

Big 12 football. Expect the over.
