Kevin Sumlin spent part of his time at SEC Media Days talking about Johnny Manziel who won the Heisman Trophy while playing for him at Texas A&M.

The Kevin Sumlin and Johnny Manziel marriage resulted in a seamless transition for the Texas A&M Aggies from the Big 12 to the SEC, plenty of excitement and a Heisman Trophy for the electrifying quarterback.

Manziel was the Aggies starting quarterback for two years before declaring for the NFL Draft after his redshirt sophomore season but two years after being a first round pick of the Cleveland Browns, he finds him out of work and his NFL career possibly already over.

Sumlin hasn’t experienced the same levels of success he did with Manziel under center and enters the 2016 season with questions about his job security.

With both of their futures uncertain, Sumlin talked about Manziel at SEC Media Days on Tuesday afternoon when he said he’s been texting his former star pupil in recent weeks and that “he’s always going to be an Aggie.”

Sumlin was less than direct when he was asked if there was anything he could have done for Manziel during his time in College Station. However, it is important for Sumlin to do whatever he can to try to implore Manziel to seek the help he clearly needs as he looks to get clean and sober.

It would have been terrible if Sumlin turned his back on him now that he’s away from the program, so hopefully, there can be a happy ending with Manziel and even if he never plays in the NFL again, he’ll always be welcome back at A&M.
