Texas A&M Football is closing in on the No. 1 2019 recruiting class. If the Aggies can seal the deal they’ll be well on their way to winning a national championship.

As soon as Texas A&M got within range of the No. 1 2019 recruiting class out came the jeering and mocking. It’s true, the Aggies’ experience near the top of the recruiting ranks is short lived and mostly unfamiliar, but that doesn’t change what’s happening right here, and right now.

If Texas A&M can complete the task the Aggies will have an inside track on making history. Since 2000, there have been 18 complete recruiting classes (the 2018 class hasn’t stepped on the field, yet). 12 of those 18 classes played in at least one national championship game during their four-year collegiate careers. 10 of those No. 1 classes won at least one national title.

55.6 percent of all No. 1 classes win at least one national championship

For those interested, I did the math. 55.6 percent of all No. 1 classes win at least one national championship. No. 2 classes were less successful, but 38.9 percent managed to win at least one title during their collegiate careers.

The data is clear. Teams that bring in a top-class translate that talent into a title more often than not. Texas A&M doesn’t have the pedigree of some of the blue-bloods that often hold the top spot, but what’s more important – a colorful history? or a talented roster entering 2018?

Texas A&M is the new kid on the block. That’s undeniable, but the next time anyone tries to knock the Aggies down a peg for their history show them this history. The data isn’t complicated. No. 1 classes win titles. Jimbo Fisher was hired to do just that.

There’s a long way to go before the Aggies can hoist their first national championship since 1939. They need to win the SEC, make the playoff and win multiple postseason games. Although it might seem like a tall task, the Aggies finally have history on their side.
