Florida Football: Early look at Gators’ top 5 targets for 2020 class
When you think of Florida football, you have to think of elite defensive back play and even though the leadership has changed over the past couple of years, that’s going to continue, especially with Dan Mullen’s hiring of Torrian Gray as cornerbacks coach. He was once the Gators’ corners coach a few years back and had plenty of success — the hire just made sense.
The Gators are going to use that newfound momentum to try and land a guy like five-star cornerback Fred Davis II from nearby Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla.
Davis II is what you would call a pest at cornerback. He’s aggressive off the snap, within five yards, and makes receivers work to get off the line of scrimmage. On top of that, he can stick to receivers’ hips like glue and doesn’t ever give up on a play.
One of the highlights that stood out from his reel was what looked like a catch, in great coverage, but Davis II stuck with the play and ripped the ball out for an incompletion before the receiver hit the ground with a reception.
Davis II is ranked the No. 30 player in the class and second-best cornerback, according to the 247Sports Composite.
