2. Trend is favorite Florida

This annual rivalry game is circled on most diehard college football fans’ schedules. Everyone seems to look forward to this SEC East showdown, especially over the past couple of years, as the winner is in good shape to make the conference championship.

For the past three years, however, Georgia has been the favorite and the Bulldogs have backed it up with three straight wins.

In Kirby Smart’s first season with the Bulldogs (and Jim McElwain’s last with Florida) in 2016, the Gators pulled off the win but that was the last victory for them in this series. In 2018, Georgia won big, 42-7. Then in Dan Mullen’s first season in 2018, Georgia won 36-17. And then last season, the game was decided by just a touchdown, but it favored the Bulldogs again.

Mullen has gotten closer in each of the past two seasons and the trend just says that this one is going to favor the Gators. They’re due.

It seems like a silly reason, but the talent gap is closing and I truly believe this Florida team might just be the best team in the SEC East, slightly ahead of where Georgia is.

From a 35-point loss in 2017 to a 19-point defeat in 2018 and then seven points in 2019 to a win in 2020. The trend is moving toward Florida here.
