2. Drew Pyne is the odd man out in the QB competition

We saw two quarterbacks on Saturday night and — spoiler alert — Drew Pyne wasn’t one of them. After getting some action in previous weeks and actually looking really good against Wisconsin which actually led to a win, Pyne was the odd man out on Saturday in the wide-open quarterback battle.

Tyler Buchner is widely considered the future under center so It’s no surprise that Brian Kelly is willing to give his freshman quarterback some time to see what he has there. He struggled a bit, though, completing just 6-of-14 passes for 113 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. His accuracy wasn’t great and the turnovers were killers. He also had 67 rushing yards and a score.

Jack Coan is the veteran in the room and he came in and played fairly well, completing 9-of-12 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. It’s pretty clear that Coan is the guy right now, but Kelly didn’t even give Pyne a shot which was surprising.

It seems like this is a two-man quarterback competition and Pyne is only going to see the field in emergency situations.
