4. Virginia Tech Hokies

The Hokies were a team that recruited and offered Jones. Also, this is a recurring topic here — Jones is an upgrade over Connor Blumrick, and Tahj Bullock is an unknown. When the Hokies were at the most successful, they’ve had a running back who is a plus in the running game.

Tech’s top leading rushers from last season, Raheem Blackshear and Braxton Burmeister are both gone. Adding Jones gives the Hokies an experienced threat in the run game, which helps a relatively inexperienced running back room. Picking up Jones would be a nice splash for first-year head coach Brent Pry.

3. UCF Knights

When is a Gus Malzahn offense most effective? A Gus Malzahn offensive is most effective when a quarterback is a plus in the running game. The Knights do have Joey Gatewood in the wings, but (once again) Jones is an upgrade. Gatewood is a great athlete and runner but still unproven as a passer.

When Cam Newton led the Auburn Tigers to the National Title, Malzahn was the offensive coordinator and the head coach when Nick Marshall beat Alabama and made it to the title game. Jones gives the “Gus Bus” offense an element as a passer Gatewood does not.
