When you’re losing big on the road, you take any advantages you can get. Even if that means putting an extra defender or two on the field.

Florida football tried that against Kentucky on Saturday.

Down 23-7 in the third quarter and facing a first-and-goal situation from Kentucky, Florida lined up in a very interesting formation with five down linemen, an edge rusher, and seven guys in the linebacking corps or defensive backfield.

Yes, that’s 13 guys.

And yet Florida still couldn’t get the stop.

This whole play was kind of a microcosm of their game against Kentucky. They just haven’t been able to stop the Wildcats all game long, leading to a 30-14 deficit in the third quarter, staring down the barrel at a third straight loss to Kentucky. A few years ago, Kentucky ended a 30-year drought against the Gators and now it’s looking like it’s about to win three straight. Wild.

Bill Napier needs to figure it out with Florida football

With a loss on Saturday afternoon, Florida will fall to 3-2 on the season and drop out of the AP Top 25 which is going to be painful, especially because it will come at the hands of Kentucky.

Billy Napier has proven to be a great recruiter, but it’s time he proves himself as a good head coach. That hasn’t happened quite yet.

Florida has had multiple mental mistakes that cost some points, such as a personal foul penalty on a punt earlier in the game which led to a 75-yard touchdown scamper by Ray Davis right after. And then this. You just can’t have this happening, especially as a Top 25 team.

Napier’s got to figure it out.
