Week 2 of the college football season has arrived as the games kick off on Thursday night, as No. 7 Miami hosts Florida A&M. While the slate in Week 1 of the season didn't have a ton of great matchups with each team getting their feet wet, Week 2 brings plenty of matchups with real College Football Playoff implications. 10. Arkansas Razorbacks vs #20 Utah Utes - Salt Lake City, UT
Morgan Scalley got his head coaching debut out of the way in a blowout of Idaho, but now the new-look Utes will be tested. Arkansas is also under a new head coach, Ryan Silverfield, and the Razorbacks are going to have to show a ton of growth this week if they're going to win the game. The Utes offense looks like it has a chance to be a special group opposite Scalley's defense, and this SEC defense will be their first chance to prove it.
9. UCF Knights vs Pitt Panthers - Pittsburgh, PA
The matchup between the UCF Knights and Pitt Panthers has a chance to be one of the most exciting matchups of the weekend. Scott Frost lucked into landing JMU QB Alonza Barnett III, and the offense flashed its potential, scoring the 2nd most points in the country in Week 1 with 73. Mason Heintschel and the Pitt offense picked up right where they left off with 59 points, passing for 480 yards in the win.
8. Arizona Wildcats vs #15 BYU Cougars - Provo, UT
One of the biggest showdowns in the Big 12 this season takes place this weekend as Arizona travels to Provo to take on BYU. The only team that could take down BYU last season was Texas Tech, but Kalani Sitake's team looks like the most well-rounded team in the conference. Brent Brennan's team could be the dark horse in the Big 12 this season with Noah Fifita back under center for another season.
7. #12 Alabama Crimson Tide vs Kentucky Wildcats - Lexington, KY
SEC play officially kicks off on Saturday as Alabama faces Kentucky in the first league game of the season. Will Stein began his Kentucky tenure with a blowout of Youngstown State, but the real test of this roster comes as they face SEC competition. Alabama got its first glimpses of new quarterback Keelon Russell and their new offensive line against East Carolina, but SEC play will provide a real test.
6. #23 Missouri Tigers vs Kansas Jayhawks - Lawrence, KS
Friday Night returns a rivalry with true hatred as Missouri and Kansas face off in the Border War. Lance Leipold's team brought back offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, and the unit showed some of the explosiveness from his first tenure. Eli Drinkwitz's team was exciting in Week 1, but any game they're without Ahmad Hardy against Power 4 competition puts them on upset alert.
5. Mississippi State Bulldogs vs Minnesota Golden Gophers - Minneapolis, MN
Two dark horses in their respective conferences face off this week as Minnesota hosts Mississippi State. Jeff Lebby's team has the potential to be one of the most explosive offenses in the country if Kamario Taylor takes that next step against Power 4 competition. The Golden Gophers offense is just as explosive, making this a thrilling matchup as Drake Lindsay, Darius Taylor, and Javon Tracy can score points in bunches.
4. Arizona State Sun Devils vs #10 Texas A&M Aggies - College Station, TX
Mike Elko's team gets its first true test of the season on Saturday as Kenny Dillingham and Arizona State come to town. The Sun Devils debuted their new look roster on Saturday with a 70-7 win over Morgan State, but going into College Station will truly show the potential of this group. Texas A&M also started the year with a blowout win, but the Sun Devils explosive offense will push a defense replacing a ton of talent.
3. #11 Oklahoma Sooners vs Michigan Wolverines - Ann Arbor, MI
The second half of a home-and-home between Michigan and Oklahoma is played this weekend as the Sooners head to Ann Arbor. Michigan was granted a new lease on life last week thanks to an added second, but Bryce Underwood's struggles are a major concern for the Wolverines. Oklahoma is coming off a trip to the CFP, but this will serve as the Sooners' first true test of the season.
2. Memphis Tigers vs Boise State Broncos - Boise, ID
Saturday's showdown between Memphis and Boise State could end up deciding who represents the Group of 6 in the College Football Playoff. Memphis has already jumped out to a 2-0 start under Charles Huff including an impressive win over fellow G6 contender UNLV. While Boise State is 0-1, the Broncos just went toe-to-toe with the Oregon Ducks showing that Spencer Danielson has another dangerous team.
1. #1 Ohio State Buckeyes vs #4 Texas Longhorns - Austin, TX
Week 2 brings a potential preview of a College Football Playoff game, if not the National Championship, as Ohio State and Texas face off. Last season, the game was ruled by defenses as both Arch Manning and Julian Sayin struggled. After earning full seasons of experience as starters, and with weapons as talented as Jeremiah Smith, Bo Jackson, Hollywood Smothers, and Cam Coleman, the game should flip to a showdown of high-flying offenses.
