The college football season is underway as Week 0 brought some fun drama and storylines to carry through the rest of the season. Each of the Power 4 conferences had at least a team in action, except for the SEC, setting the league to debut in full in Week 1. This season is going to be wild in the SEC due to the coaching changes as well as the fact that the Big Ten has won the past 3 National Championships.
Heading into the SEC, the top of the league feels jam packed as you could make an argument for several teams as the league's best. Week 1 will be key for proving the strength of several teams, but on paper there's a clear hierarchy of contenders and teams that are a ways off from posting a winning season.
Power ranking the SEC heading into the 2026 season
16. Arkansas Razorbacks
Ryan Silverfield takes over at the helm of Arkansas, and he's facing a massive uphill climb in his first season. Taylen Green is off to the NFL, and Junior KJ Jackson steps into the role with limited experience and a ton of fresh faces around him. The defense will be almost an entirely new unit, which means they'll need to gel, but the unit has Quincy Rhodes Jr rushing off the edge, who can wreck anyone's game.
15. Vanderbilt Commodores
Diego Pavia's magical run at Vanderbilt is over, and now Clark Lea is tasked with winning with a new quarterback. While Vanderbilt signed 5-star QB Jared Curtis, veteran Blaze Berlowitz will start the season under center, which lowers the Commodores' ceiling. The team still has a ton of talent in the trenches and a veteran defense, which should help them remain competitive, but without the difference-making quarterback, it'll be tough to win SEC games.
14. Kentucky Wildcats
Mark Stoops' time in Lexington came to an end this offseason with Kentucky hiring Oregon OC Will Stein to lead the program. The team may go as far as Notre Dame transfer QB Kenny Minchey takes them in his first season as a starter. The big question for Kentucky will be if all this transfer talent can gel together and compete at a high-level in SEC play, as there are plenty of exciting pieces on this roster.
13. Mississippi State Bulldogs
After showing small signs of improvement last season, it's time for Jeff Lebby to push for a winning season. Kamario Taylor flashed his talent in limited playing time, and now he has a chance to be one of the most electric players in the Country if he improves as a passer. The defense has one of the best cornerbacks in the Country with Kelley Jones back in the fold, but the unit will need to improve greatly after allowing 30.2 points per game last season.
12. Missouri Tigers
Missouri rewarded Eli Drinkwitz with a big extension last season, but it's time for Missouri to take the next step toward CFP contention. The big questions will be how Austin Simmons performs after limited playing time at Ole Miss, and the health of Ahmad Hardy, as he suffered a gunshot wound this offseason. Nearly the entire starting defense is made up of upperclassmen, which should allow the unit to push for another top 20 finish.
11. South Carolina Gamecocks
Shane Beamer enters 2026 needing a bounce back season after such an underwhelming year for the Gamecocks. The roster truly has 3 aliens in LaNorris Sellers, Nyck Harbor, and Dylan Stewart who are going to need to be the driving force behind a winning season. The biggest question will be if this team can stay healthy enough and if they have enough depth, as there have been plenty of big injuries during camp.
10. Auburn Tigers
Alex Golesh replaces Hugh Freeze at Auburn, and while the roster may not be as talented as we've seen in recent years, it should be a better team. Byrum Brown has plenty of experience in Golesh's offense, and he'll finally give this offense a competent quarterback, which is the biggest difference for the program. The defense was able to retain DJ Durkin, as well as a ton of talent, which should allow the unit to remain a strength.
9. Florida Gators
Fresh off his run to the CFP with Tulane, Jon Sumrall enters the season with a dark horse chance to make a return trip. Buster Faulkner gives the Gators one of the best offensive coordinators in the Country, and his quarterback Aaron Philo, has experience in the offense. Having Jadan Baugh in the backfield and an elite room of wide receivers could allow this offense to be the driving force behind a push for the Playoff.
8. Tennessee Volunteers
The 2025 season for Tennessee was odd, with Nico Iamaleava and the team parting ways in the Spring over NIL disputes, ultimately hurting both parties. Josh Heupel has a new potential freshman phenom at quarterback in Faizon Brandon, who has all the tools to develop into a star. The defense will have a new look with Jim Knowles taking over at coordinator, but it'll be difficult to replace the elite cornerbacks the team lost to the NFL.
7. LSU Tigers
Lane Kiffin dominated the offseason headlines, and now it's time for the Tigers to finally start playing under their new head coach. The roster has been overhauled with tons of Transfer Portal additions, including some players who spent this offseason in NFL camps. The Tigers have a schedule that may end up slowing the hype, while the distractions may end up being too much to overcome.
6. Alabama Crimson Tide
Kalen DeBoer took Alabama to the College Football Playoff last season, and he'll start to try making deeper runs this season. Keelon Russell takes over for Ty Simpson, and his upside may determine just how far the Crimson Tide goes, especially if the offensive line coaching change helps the run game. The defense is led by arguably the Nation's best secondary, and if the defensive line can rush the passer, this could be one of the best units in the league.
5. Texas A&M Aggies
The start to Mike Elko's time in College Station has been everything Texas A&M hoped Jimbo would deliver, and now it's time to build on it. Marcel Reed and Mario Craver return as one of the best duos in the Country, but will be playing with 4 new starters on the offensive line. The defense returns most of the unit from last season, but will need someone to step up and replace Cashius Howell's production in order to be an elite unit.
4. Oklahoma Sooners
Brent Venables finally broke through to the College Football Playoff last season, and now Oklahoma will look to take it a step further. John Mateer returns at quarterback, and if he can stay healthy, the offense should take a massive step forward around him. The defense loses R. Mason Thomas, but Brent Venables has the talent in this unit to produce another suffocating defense led by David Stone in the middle.
3. Ole Miss Rebels
Pete Golding starts his first full season as Ole Miss' head coach after leading the Rebels on a deep CFP run. While the offensive play callers left for Ole Miss, Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy are back in Oxford, with both having the ability to emerge as Heisman contenders. Pete Golding's defense should remain one of the conference's best units, but replacing Princewill Umanmielen off the edge is a tough ask.
2. Georgia Bulldogs
The past two seasons have been early exits for the Georgia Bulldogs, with Kirby Smart's team failing to win a game in the Playoff. This season, the offense has continuity with Gunner Stockton and Nate Frazier set to lead the unit, while the receiving core is going to need to step up. The defense is going to need to find pass rush production, but the linebacking core and secondary are among the best in the Country.
1. Texas Longhorns
Texas entered last season as the nation's top-ranked team, but the Longhorns actually look like a team worthy of that hype this season. Arch Manning started to match the hype toward the end of the season, and adding elite weapons in Hollywood Smothers, Raleek Brown, and Cam Coleman will supercharge this unit. The defense brings Will Muschamp in to call plays, and with Collin Simmons, Bo Mascoe, and Rasheem Biles, the unit could be the best in the conference.
