Fall Camp in college football is all about working through the final kinks before the start of the season. Heading into the Fall, most teams hope to have their starting quarterback in place, but it doesn't always work out that way, for better or worse. The elimination of the Spring Transfer Portal has led to several marquee programs holding quarterback battles that are still unsettled as the season nears.
Spring practices started the movement in some of the battles, but Fall camp has quickly proved where some of the battles are trending. With the season rapidly approaching, 5 quarterback battles feel like they could end any day now.
5 major quarterback battles that could quickly come to a close
Alabama Crimson Tide - Keelon Russell
Replacing Ty Simpson is the biggest question for Kalen DeBoer, and this offseason marks the first time he'll have a quarterback he brought to Alabama under center. When former Washington transfer Austin Mack relieved Ty Simpson in the Rose Bowl, it appeared that he may be next up in the quarterback room. The issue for Mack is that few quarterback recruits have the talent that Keelon Russell brings to the table.
The momentum seemingly started to fully shift in Keelon Russell's direction when he dominated in Alabama's A-Day Spring Game in front of all the fans. This Summer, all the buzz out of Tuscaloosa has been about the way Russell continues to flash his talent. Ryan Grubb told the media that the staff is closing in on a decision, and it appears that Russell will be the pick.

Tennessee Volunteers - Faizon Brandon
Joey Aguilar wasn't able to return for another season, and after Tennessee fell short in its recruitment of Sam Leavitt, it became clear the Volunteers were going to have a quarterback battle. Tennessee did bring in a transfer, veteran Ryan Staub, but it was clear that the two players best suited for the gig were redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and true freshman Faizon Brandon.
Every day, the Tennessee reporters share how special Faizon Brandon looks, even while George MacIntyre looks like a solid option. Both quarterbacks are inexperienced, so the battle comes down to who's the more talented player, and if Brandon is grasping the offense as a true freshman, the decision feels like a no-brainer.
Iowa - Jeremy Hecklinski
This weekend, Iowa held its first scrimmage of the fall, and it looks like the play on the field may have determined the outcome of the battle, as Jeremy Hecklinski had an impressive day. Kirk Ferentz continues to say that the battle is up in the air, but being the clear superior quarterback in a scrimmage is a great step toward winning a battle.
Assuming both guys are done. Here’s how Iowa’s QBs performed:

Hank Brown: 9-21 for 42 yards. 0 touchdowns, 0 picks.
Jeremy Hecklinski: 17-25 for 205 yards. 5 touchdowns. 0 picks.
North Carolina Tar Heels - Miles O'Neil
Bill Belichick heads into his second season at North Carolina looking to find a new quarterback after Gio Lopez clearly wasn't the answer. This offseason, the battle is between Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards, who missed most of last season with injury, and Texas A&M transfer Miles O'Neil. The starting experience hasn't seemed to help Billy Edwards, as all the buzz out of Chapel Hill has favored the Texas A&M transfer.
Florida Gators - Aaron Philo
A new regime takes over at the helm of the Florida Gators, and with DJ Lagway departing, a new starting quarterback is needed. As soon as Tramell Jones Jr arrived on campus last season, he started generating buzz, but with a new coaching staff, none of that was seen. The battle for Jones only got harder when Jon Sumrall hired Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, and he brought Aaron Philo with him.
Aaron Philo has spent the last few seasons at Georgia Tech, learning Buster Faulkner's complex offense, which gives him a major advantage in this battle. Both quarterbacks have shown flashes in this battle, but with the season approaching, it looks like Philo's experience is going to land him the starting gig.
