TCU Football: Kenny Hill looks for redemption with Horned Frogs

The TCU Horned Frogs are losing star quarterback Trevone Boykin. Can Kenny Hill fill the void?

Kenny Hill‘s long story from Texas A&M starter to humbled TCU backup is almost over. This year the junior, transfer Hill is battling redshirt sophomore Foster Sawyer for the TCU Horned Frogs starting job. If he takes the job, he has one crazy redemption story on his hands.

Hill started off the 2014 season shredding defenses and leading the Aggies to a 5-0 start. However, a rough, turnover-filled three losses against Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Alabama began to show cracks in Hill’s game. The Aggies lost all three contests and  Hill was suspended two games for a violation of team rules. The on and off the field problems resulted in him losing the job to true freshman Kyle Allen.

Overall, the former Southlake Carroll product did more positive than negative things on the field. In eight starts he threw for 2,649 yards 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Although he never quite got on track during the tough schedule. It doesn’t help that he had no help on defense as the Aggies gave up 28.1 points per game.

The true sophomore transferred to the TCU Horned Frogs but had to sit out the 2015 season. His redshirt allows him two more seasons in college football. Hill’s experience should be a huge addition to the Horned Frogs’ offense.

Although they are losing Boykin, it’s rare for a team to transition so easy at the quarterback position. Also, TCU’s offense has the luxury of the best co-offensive coordinator duo in college football. Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie will make Hill a solid starter if he earns the starting job.

The battle for the starting quarterback job will be long and arduous. Head coach Gary Patterson already said the battle will go into the fall, but the spring game didn’t help.

TCU’s spring game went poorly from an offensive standpoint. Hill had a below average game going just 9-for-20 for just 75 yards. Sawyer had an even worse day completing 7-of-15 passes for 80 yards and an interception.

Hill has a prime opportunity as a part of the TCU Horned Frogs are coming off back-to-back 11-plus wins. TCU is always talented and if Hill can return to early A&M form he could redeem his once promising career.
