Coming into the offseason, this was going to be a pivotal offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs if they were going to get back to being the dynasty we've seen built over several seasons. Before Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL, this team was going to miss the Playoffs, and the injury only made nailing this offseason more important.
On Wednesday, the Chiefs turned the pressure of the offseason up a notch by trading away All Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie. The deal nets the Chiefs an additional 1st Round Pick in this year's NFL Draft along with two picks much later in the draft. After trading away an All Pro defender, the Chiefs have far more pressure to nail this year's draft.
Trent McDuffie trade shakes Chiefs NFL Draft plans
9. Kansas City Chiefs: Jeremiyah Love - Running Back - Notre Dame
Part of trading away a player like Trent McDuffie is acknowledging that the offense needs to add help for Patrick Mahomes. The easiest way to ease Mahomes back into the season is by giving him a dynamic rushing attack. Jeremiyah Love is arguably the best player in this class regardless of position, and he'd instantly transform this offense.
29. Kansas City Chiefs: Caleb Banks - Defensive Tackle - Florida
Chris Jones is aging, and the defensive front needs to go out and add pieces that can help get after the passer. Caleb Banks' biggest concern is staying healthy, but when he's on the field, he's arguably a Top 5 talent in this class. Banks can come in and give the Chiefs more of a presence up the middle, allowing Chris Jones to move around based on matchups.
40. Kansas City Chiefs: R Mason Thomas - Edge Rusher - Oklahoma
Along the same lines, the Chiefs need to add a reliable edge rusher opposite George Karlaftis to help this defense hit the next level. Oklahoma star R Mason Thomas has posted back-to-back solid seasons, and would instantly give the team more of a presence off the edge. Thomas is undersized for the position, but has elite burst and bend that make him one of the tougher players to block in this class.
74. Kansas City Chiefs: Michael Trigg - Tight End - Baylor
Travis Kelce will be back this season, but it's hard to continue couting on him to be a top level producer. The Chiefs will need to look to add a player who can contribute now while hopefully becoming the eventual full-time starter. Michael Trigg is an elite receiver for the position, and if he can develop as a blocker he'd be a great weapon for Andy Reid.
