Week 6 was all about the state of Mississippi after the Mississippi State Bulldogs took down the then sixth-ranked Texas A&M Aggies 48-31 and the Ole Miss Rebels upset the then third-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 23-17. The two teams went into a tie for third in the AP Poll.
It was the story of week 7 as well. Mississippi State took down the second-ranked Auburn Tigers 38-23 while Ole Miss defeated Texas A&M 35-20. That allowed Mississippi State to jump the Florida State Seminoles, who defeated the Syracuse Orange 38-20, to become No. 1. Florida State is now No. 2 and Ole Miss is No.3.
The Baylor Bears, who rallied to take down the TCU Horned Frogs by scoring the final 24 points in a 61-58 victory, are No.4. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who held off the North Carolina Tar Heels, are No. 5. In addition to those five teams, there is one other unbeaten – the Marshall Thundering Herd. They have entered the poll as No. 25.
